Pioneering guitarist and master of ambient, experimental & electronic music, Rafael Toral, presents ‘Spectral Evolution’ in the incredible acoustic setting of the Sonic Lab at SARC.
Alongside renowned contemporaries such as Jim O’Rourke, Christian Fennesz, and Peter Rehberg, Portugal’s Rafael Toral reinvigorated the electronic and experimental scenes of the nineties with his pioneering work for electric guitar.
Pulling influence equally from rock, jazz, ambient, and minimalism, Toral expertly and beautifully combined guitar with electronics over a series of acclaimed releases - producing warm, welcoming waves of ambience and seemingly endless meditative tones. He ushered in a shift in minimal and ambient music which would influence numerous artists following in his wake over the coming years.
Toral has long been championed by O’Rourke – both 1995’s classic ‘Wave Field’ and 2024’s “return” to the guitar ‘Spectral Evolution’ (both The Wire and Boomkat’s second best album of that year) were issued on his labels. In 2025, Toral released a set of unique takes on jazz standards, ‘Traveling Light’, through Chicago’s legendary Drag City label.
Toral will conclude his residency at the Sonic Arts Research Centre by presenting ‘Spectral Evolution’ live. Showcasing the dynamic range and emotive depth of that album, and utilising the incredible acoustic of the Sonic Lab, this is an opportunity to immerse yourself in groundbreaking music aimed fully at both the head and the heart.
