President Trump’s policy of ‘peace through strength’ and the promotion of an America First doctrine have introduced a new world order where historical US and European allegiances are strained to breaking point. China is also expanding its global domination as a top trading partner in Africa and South America, controlling 62% of the world's rare earth mineral production, crucial for technology and defence, as well as increasing its military powers. Both superpowers came to trade war blows recently but what state of play will these simmering geopolitical tensions bring in the future and what will the implications be for the rest of the world?

Susan Coughtrie has been Executive Director of the Foreign Policy Centre, a democracy-focused international affairs think tank, since January 2023. She has worked in the human rights field for almost 15 years and is also a Trustee for the Campaign for Freedom of Information in Scotland and an Honorary Fellow at City St George's, University of London.

Dr Andrew Chubb is a Senior Lecturer in Chinese Politics and International Relations in the School of Global Affairs at Lancaster University. He is also a Fellow in the Center for China Analysis at the Asia Society Policy Institute and a Research Fellow at the Foreign Policy Centre. He researches the relationships between Chinese domestic politics and international relations, with a focus on propaganda, public opinion and maritime and territorial disputes.

Jason Boxt is a Principal at RXN in Washington DC. He has worked in public affairs and opinion research for more than 25 years, with expertise in communications and digital research, reputation and brand management, campaign and message development, and political strategy. (ONLINE)
