Information

In 2023 news broke of the discovery and decoding of 57 secret letters written by Mary Queen of Scots and smuggled out by visitors during her incarceration. Using this as a point of reference, Exile tells the lesser-known story of Mary's years in captivity in England, almost half of her life. Within her prison walls, Mary was not docile or resigned, and it was only as her execution approached that she lost hope of a return to Scotland to reign. The acclaimed writer, Rosemary Goring, has produced a penetrating psychological portrait of one of history's greatest queens. In conversation with Alan Taylor.
