Shelley Klein returns to her Scottish Borders childhood home to care for her father, pioneering textile designer Bernat Klein. A tender memoir exploring family, creativity and grief.
Returning to the Scottish Borders home of her childhood, Shelley Klein steps once more into a remarkable modernist house of coloured glass, open-plan spaces and woodland light. It was here she grew up with her father, pioneering textile designer Bernat Klein, whose bold colours and textures helped shape the iconic fashions of the 1960s and 70s. Thirty years later, Shelley comes back to High Sunderland to care for him in his final years, discovering that neither the house nor his fiercely independent spirit has changed. Nearby stands his celebrated design studio, also created by architect Peter Womersley, now the focus of an exciting campaign for restoration and renewed creative life. Tender, funny and deeply moving, The See-Through House is a powerful reflection on family, creativity, grief and the meaning of home.
