Information

Join the Deputy Presiding Officer Liam McArthur MSP in conversation with the political activist, writer and member of the Russian protest art collective Pussy Riot, Maria ‘Masha’ Alyokhina to discuss her life as recorded in the memoirs Riot Days and the forthcoming Political Girl. Having gained global notoriety in 2012 when the collective were imprisoned for two years in a penal colony as a consequence of their performance of a ‘punk prayer’ inside Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, Masha’s life was one of house arrest and detention till she escaped Russia dressed as a food courier in 2022. Join her to discuss why the right to protest and freedom of speech are so vital in the face of growing global authoritarianism.
