The Caucasian Chalk Circle tells the story of a young servant, Grusha, who rescues an abandoned child during a civil war and sacrifices everything to protect him. Meanwhile, drunk scribe Azdak finds himself in the role of judge and passes rulings that criticise those in power. Grusha’s difficult journey will take her into Azdak’s court, where she will ultimately face the trial of ‘the chalk circle’.
With themes of social inequality and self-sacrifice, Bertolt Brecht’s classic play explores true justice and compassion over legal privilege and power. With a new translation by Alistair Beaton, this exciting production, by PASS BA Hons (Drama) students, stages this acclaimed play through a punk perspective and features original live music.
This amateur production of The Caucasian Chalk Circle is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd.
