The team at Pianodrome invite you to join us in furnishing our very own Piano Cafe. And you’ve guessed it - we are building everything entirely out of pianos!
Come along to our free workshops and learn to make a stool or table to furnish our Piano Cafe at Bruntsfield Pianodrome Community Hub. Together we will learn upcycling and tool use, crafting sturdy beautiful items entirely out of pianos.
These workshops are open to all abilities.
The workshops are divided by age, some are 16+ and some are suitable for ages 8-16. Check which is which when you book your place. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
Wear clothes you don't mind getting mucky in.
You will receive your deposit back in cash when you arrive.
More about the project
We are Pianodrome CIC. We create unique, playable, community-centred sculptures made entirely from otherwise disused pianos. We have a core ethos of sustainability through reuse and upcycling. Since the project started in 2017 we have saved over 600 pianos from landfill, by either restoring and rehoming them or dismantling those which are beyond repair to create iconic sculptures such as our world famous in-the-round piano amphitheatre, the Pianodrome. We have inhabited pop up spaces in Edinburgh, Leeds, and North Carolina.
Now Pianodrome is activating a new city centre space in a community-owned ex-church called St. Oswalds in the heart of Bruntsfield. Throughout the summer we have been working with a growing team of volunteers to prepare the space; we’ve been cleaning the space, uncovering an otherwise hidden wooden floor, sanding and varnishing and installing our Pianodrome amphitheatre in the space.
Now we are inviting you all in to Build your own Piano Cafe.
We are hosting a series of workshops inviting the local community to create furniture in and for the space with us. Together we will collaboratively create tables and chairs, and other sculptural furnishings as required, entirely out of reclaimed piano parts. The resulting furnishings will be used by the new Pianodrome Bruntsfield space, which will host a pop-up community cafe to complement the rest of the building’s music, theatre, dance and art activities.
These workshops will be located on-site in Bruntsfield Pianodrome Community Hub at the St Oswald’s Centre, where we will set up a temporary upcycling workshop space with hand tools, piano parts and suggested designs to help you get started.
We can’t wait to see you there!
