A folk-medieval Robin Hood musical based on the early medieval ballads. Join the Merry Men for a live musical retelling of a 1000-year old story about facing corruption through fellowship.
The city of Nottingham is in turmoil as Prince John and Prince Geoffrey compete for their absent brother’s throne, leaving the everyday citizens of Nottingham to suffer their impossible demands. But surrounding this dark city is the sunlit haven of peace that is Sherwood Forest. Its inhabitants, led by the infamous Robin Hood, obey only the rules of survival and pledge loyalty only to themselves. They can take what they want and live how they please; who has the right to tell them otherwise? The peace of their world is abruptly broken when Friar Tuck is arrested by Prince John’s power-hungry team and it is up to the Merry Men to get him back. But the Prince’s greedy hand is a powerful one and his minions are bloodthirsty. Our simple band of carefree friends are forced to face the heavy hand that rules their world. How do we decide who gets to make the rules? And who are we to fight alone?
This original musical stays true to the ballads' timeless themes of challenging the status quo and appealing to our most primal need for community and fellowship. Join the Merry Men in this exciting world premiere; a fresh authentic retelling of an ancient enduring story.
This production is brought to you by the EdinBards (@theedinbards on Instagram), a local theatre community that has been in development since 2023 with the purpose of supporting local new developing musicals. Over the past year we have made appearances at Traquair Medieval Fayre, local Edinburgh scratch nights, and on BBC Radio Nottingham's breakfast show to promote our production of Nottingham. After 10 years of writing and researching, we are immensely proud and excited to bring the full production to audiences for the first time at the beautiful Pianodrome.
