How do things go wrong? When does it happen? And who decides? If failure is an ever present possibility (inevitability?) in our making how do we negotiate our relationship with it?
With reference to drawings, paintings, writers and musicians artist Alan McGowan will consider the issue of getting it "wrong" and in Samuel Beckett's phrase think about "failing better".
This talk will take place in the historical and atmospheric Anatomy Lecture Theatre of the old Dick Veterinary School at Summerhall and be accompanied by a simultaneous live webcast.

Alan McGowan is an Edinburgh based figurative artist whose award winning work has featured regularly in exhibitions of contemporary painting including at the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Scottish Portrait Awards. He was a semi-finalist in the Sky Portrait Artist of the Year, and in 2022 he created a live painting performance "Flow" for the Edinburgh festival fringe.
Alan has also taught art for over thirty years in places such as the Royal Academy London, Edinburgh College of Art, Leith School of Art, the RHA Dublin, and many other institutions and in 2017 published the monograph "Unstill Life".
