Prestongrange old and new – a walk through industry

Information

Explore mighty Prestongrange, a site of major importance to Scotland’s industrial revolution. Prestongrange employed thousands in heavy industries, from early mining in the 1200s, glassmaking in the 1600s, to industrial brick making in the 1900s. Remnants of these former industries can still be seen, including the rare Hoffman Kiln and the Cornish Beam Engine, which is unique in Scotland.

Get access to the heritage buildings on our site including the Power House and Engine Shed, which houses the locomotive collection. Revel in Prestongrange’s tranquillity today.

Our friendly and knowledgeable Museum Assistants will take you on a guided tour of the site and welcome you to the Visitor Centre with exhibitions and a café.

This is an easy walk on even surfaces. Five steps at one stage, but these can be easily circumnavigated by a grassy slope.

The walk includes entrance to the Cornish Beam Engine where visitors can choose to climb the interior staircase to view the mechanism, or alternatively, wait outside.

Well-behaved and on the lead dogs are welcome. There are lots of stops where the guide gives info, which some dogs may not like.

Suitable for ages 16+.

Toilets at the start and you can go to them during the walk.

Getting there
The walk begins at Prestongrange Museum Visitor Centre. Prestongrange Museum is easily accessible by public transport with bus stops nearby.
