From North Berwick’s historic shoreline to the top of the Law with its Bronze and Iron Age remains
Walk from North Berwick’s historic Kirk Ness, site of the reputed Black Sabbath, along the East Beach studying geology as we go. From there we head to the former site of the town’s medieval castle, discussing wars, monarchs and dark deeds.
Then we’ll walk up the Glen, discussing Robert Louis Stevenson’s works inspired by the town and the ruined mills and wash houses.
The path now takes us to the foot of the Law with its reed beds and marshland, then steepens as we climb up onto the tail of the Law discussing glaciation, before we head to the path that leads straight into the heart of the Bronze Age and Iron Age settlements.
As we reach the summit we will take in the views and ponder the ruins on the summit before heading back down the path to the town and finish our walk in the Lodge grounds.
More information
A good level of fitness and mobility will be required to cover the terrain involved in this walk as it involves both a sandy beach and uneven, steep paths up the Law. This makes it unsuitable for young children and those who are not steady on their feet.
Should the conditions be wet the paths could become muddy so sturdy footwear is recommended.
Only well behaved dogs that are kept on the lead are suitable for this walk. No more than 3 dogs will be accommodated. Please select the appropriate ticket on booking.
This walk is suitable for adults aged 16 and over.
There are toilet facilities at the start of the walk in the Seabird Centre and at the harbour. The walk will end by walking through the Lodge where there are pubic toilets nearby at Imperial Car Park.
Takeaway food and drinks are available at the start of the walk at the Seabird Centre and The Rocketeer while there are plenty of cafes available along the High Street at the end of the walk.
What to bring
This is Scotland so bring waterproofs, an extra layer, water and a lunch to eat at the top of the Law. You might also like to bring your own basic first aid kit.
